Istare out of the window of the Compass as Angie brings us back to the shelter from the hospital. Thankfully, it had only taken a couple hours for the doctors to evaluate me before determining that I could manage at home.

They hadn’t been thrilled with my explanation for the wound on my calf being a dog bite that I’d bandaged at home, but they couldn’t argue with me about it either. They just re-wrapped it along with other burns and wounds I potentially accumulated in my escape from the fire.

Unfortunately, outside of a cough that will probably take a little while to subside, my wounds are more emotional than physical from that attack. Not only is the diner that we went to frequently gone, but Tyrell won’t be around to cheer us up either.

Tyrell with his constant laughter. The way he and Lissa would subtly tease each other before they finally took the dating plunge only a couple weeks ago. It seems impossible for it to be over so soon.

A lone tear streaks down my soot-covered cheek as I focus on keeping my breathing as even as I can, despite the stray hiccup that manages to escape once in a while.

“I can hear your racing heart, Cassie. Is there something you want to talk about? You know I’m here for you, too, right?” Angie asks with a quick glance before quickly refocusing on the road.

I shake my head, not wanting to talk, then remember she can’t really watch me for a response. I take a deep, shaky breath as I calm myself enough to get the words out.

“Not right now, Angie, but thanks. I just need some time to process and a shower, I think.” I roughly wipe the stray tear from my cheek as I watch trees flash past the window. The scene slowly changes to houses as we get closer to the shelter—my temporary home.

“Well, the offer stands if you ever change your mind,” she says reassuringly.

“Why didn’t Derek come get me?” I ask curiously. As much as I appreciate Angie, it still stings a little that Derek wasn’t the one in the waiting room to bring me back.

“He gets really antsy around human doctors. From what Amelia told me, the doctors were asking too many questions about his lack of injuries after his heroics saving you. He was worried they would ask to run blood work or double-check x-rays or something.” She chuckles. “He can be quite the tough guy, but put him anywhere near a doctor and he’s a scared kitten running up a tree. I think he has what humans call, ‘white-coat syndrome.’”

I give her a small smile when she’s able to quickly peek in my direction. Her explanation does loosen a little of the tightness in my chest. Anything to help my breathing at this point is appreciated.

It’s weird to think of Derek afraid of anything since he’s always joking around, but the fear of doctors seems to be a consistent fear among many people I know.
